Half of Consumers Thought Joker Should Have Won The Golden Globe Last Night

Last night kicked off the 2020 award season with the 77th annual Golden Globes, a celebration of the year’s achievements in entertainment media. But what if the average moviegoer or TV viewer got the chance to select this year’s winners, instead of the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association? Suffice it to say, some of the results would have been very different!

Back in December, we asked 1000 U.S. consumers to choose their own winners from the nominees for several categories, including both Best Motion Picture awards and all three Best Television Series awards

Below are the results, with the actual winner of each award highlighted in orange:

But that’s not all! In an open-ended question, we asked survey respondents to list names and titles that they felt were snubbed this year. most people cited HBO’s Watchmen and Robert Deniro’s performance in Irishmen as examples; there was also a a general call for more female directors and creators of color to be nominated next year, a criticism that host Ricky Gervais also levied between awards

“The voice of the consumer holds more weight than ever before, which can make the gulf between what audiences want and what critics choose to reward feel even wider at times,” said Suzy founder and CEO Matt Britton. “Suzy empowers companies to co-create products directly with their consumers, obtaining direct and honest feedback to any question at a moment’s notice. Unlike the outcome of most award shows, everyone ends up winning.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve gone to our consumer panel to gauge award show responses; this time last year, we also found that 34% of moviegoers who watched the 76th Golden Globes thought Bohemian Rhapsody should have won for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) instead of Green Book
